Year-round road E-134 of Telemark, Rennfast-association of Stavanger, and at last, completely at the end of 2000, triangle connection to Bømlo and Stord opened has improved communication significantly. This road network has linked Haugalandet closer together as a common living and working region.
Haugesund has become a market and service center with a more versatile business. Sea industries no longer characterize the city alone. Haugesund has on a national basis by far the highest turnover rates in trade industries. It has to do with the city's regional center for a population of around 150,000 people.
The communications externally is good with boat and bus connections with Bergen and Stavanger - bus service also of Telemark. At the beginning of this century, work is hard to give Haukelivegen status as a national transportation corridor. Karmsund Harbor - which stretches from Bokn to Bømlo - is one of the 5 largest in cargo volume.
Haugesund Airport, Karmøy was opened in 1975. There are direct flights to London, Alicante, Bremen Oslo and Bergen. It is now possible to land larger aircraft and therefor possible to establish direct flights to more distant destinations.
